How to Add Users to Your PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S

If you’ve invested countless hours achieving high scores, exploring expansive virtual worlds, and leveling up, the last thing you want is for a housemate or an unexpected guest to sit down in front of your gaming console and disrupt all your hard-earned progress.

Whether you’re the proud owner of a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S, you have the power to set up multiple user accounts, ensuring that games, achievements, and apps remain your exclusive domain while granting others the opportunity to enjoy the console as well. The process differs depending on whether these individuals are registered users or temporary guests. Users with their own Sony or Microsoft accounts simply need to enter their credentials once and can protect their accounts with a PIN code. On the other hand, guest mode provides a convenient solution for friends or family members visiting briefly, allowing them to play on your console without the need for account registration. When they sign out, all their gaming data is wiped clean, leaving no trace behind.

In addition to catering to individual gamers, the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S also offer family-oriented features. If you have children in the household who want to track their gaming progress but aren’t allowed to purchase or access certain content, family accounts provide a suitable solution. Both Sony and Microsoft permit you to create accounts for your kids, allowing you to monitor what games they can play, what content they can access, and even when gaming is allowed. These accounts can then be integrated into your gaming system seamlessly.

Whether you’re adding full-fledged gamers, temporary guests, or family members, managing user accounts on the latest console generation is a straightforward process. Here’s a guide on how to do it for both Sony’s PlayStation 5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X/S.

Sony PlayStation 5

If you’re gaming on a Sony PS5 and want to add guest accounts or full user accounts, follow these steps:

  1. Select your existing profile avatar located at the top of the home screen.
  2. Choose “Switch User” and then “Add User,” which will bring up a pop-up window on the screen.

For guest accounts:

  • Opt for “Sign In” or “Quick Play” on the right side of the pop-up window. “Sign In” allows the guest to log into the PlayStation Network and access their own user data and games, while “Quick Play” limits them to games already installed on the PS5, keeping their gaming activity incognito.
  • When exiting guest mode, all of the player’s local data is deleted from the console.
  • Select the guest account avatar at the top of the home screen (the smiley face) and choose “Switch User” to return to your standard account, effectively removing the guest account.

For continuing users:

  • Under “Add a user to this PS5” in the “Add User” window, select “Get Started.” This creates additional users with the same privileges as the original one, enabling full game management and local gameplay data storage.
  • If the additional user doesn’t have a PlayStation Network account, they can create one. Otherwise, they can sign in using their PSN account credentials.

To add a PIN code:

  • Enhance security by preventing others from accessing your account. Go to “Settings” (the cog icon at the top of the interface), select “Users and Accounts,” then choose “Login Settings” and enable “Require a PS5 Login Passcode.”

To remove a user account:

  • Navigate to “Settings,” then “Users and Accounts” and select “Delete Users.” Choose the account you wish to remove.

To add family members:

  • First, inform Sony about your family members through the “Family Management” section of your PlayStation Network account on the web.
  • After completing this step, open “Settings,” select “Users and Accounts,” then go to “Family” and choose “Add Family Member.” For children, you can manage content, game access, screen time, and more via “Family Management” on the same screen.

  1. Press the Xbox button on your controller.
  2. Use the D-pad to scroll to the “Profile & system” page.

For guest accounts:

  • Create a guest account on your Xbox by selecting “Add guest.” A guest account is instantly created.
  • You can switch between user accounts by returning to the “Profile & system” page, selecting “Add or switch,” and then choosing a user account.
  • To delete the guest account, select “Sign out” from the “Profile & system” page and then choose the guest account. Guests have access to games but can’t make purchases, and their gaming achievements won’t be logged on the console.

For continuing users:

  • Select “Add or switch” from the “Profile & system” page, then choose “Add new” and sign in to the relevant Xbox or Microsoft account.

To add a PIN code:

  • You can add a PIN code when adding a user account or do it later. Open “Settings” under “Profile & system,” select “Account,” then “Sign-in, security & PIN,” and choose “Create my PIN.”

To remove a user account:

  • Open “Settings” under “Profile & system,” select “Account,” then “Remove accounts.”

To add family members:

  • The process varies when adding a child account to the Xbox. First, the child needs to be registered as part of your family through the “Your Family” section in your Microsoft account dashboard on the web.
  • After this step, you can add or remove family members from your console by selecting “Settings” from the “Profile & system” page, then going to “Account,” “Family settings,” and “Manage family members.” During the sign-in process for new family members, you can set parental controls if needed.
